Gallop into Good Times
Abernathy Farm offers a variety of lesson horses to learn on. Each horse has their own personality and provides different learning opportunities for riders at every level. Riders must be at least 7 years old to begin lessons.
Riding Lessons
English and Western Lessons available
All lessons include
Horsemanship skills like grooming, tacking, basic horse care, and proper terminology in breeds, colors, and equipment.
Instruction in proper equitation of sitting, posting, and two point positions
English Hunt Seat
English lessons can be geared toward flat work to low level jumping (cross rails to 2’9)
Flat work means on the arena rail riding without jumping.
Low level jumping includes 18 inch cross rails up to 2’9 jumps. Jumping can be taught with one individual jump, up to a course of 8 jumps in a specified pattern.
Abernathy Farm prioritizes the long term health of the horse and reserves the right to limit jumping heights and duration for individual lesson horses. This is to maintain the horses’ quality of life well into their golden years. Horses generally can live and enjoy riding upwards of 25 years old.
Western
Western lessons can accommodate your pleasure trail rider to your Ranch horse type competitor.
Lessons include pattern work, quality transitions and other tests that reflect a working ranch horse. Some examples include: flexion, turning on the haunches and forehand, side-passing
Please note Abernathy Farm Lesson horses are not competitive rodeo horses (barrels, poles, etc) due to the number of students riding and long term welfare of the horse. If you would like to compete in these events, we would love to help you find and purchase a horse of your own. We can also provide quality boarding and instruction on your own horse, if you choose to pursue this goal.
